What about venture motivates you?
I derive energy and motivation from spending time surrounded by people who absolutely love what they do in the investing world and, more importantly, founders building groundbreaking companies to power the future. I can’t think of another career where you’re surrounded by such a high density of people at the nexus of insane talent and passion.
The ability to learn from some of the wisest people across numerous disparate fields is something I value immensely.
What qualities should a founder look for in an investor?
I think it’s critical for founders to find partners who will be honest and sincere instead of preserving optionality. An investor who will roll up their sleeves to help no matter the circumstance and without trying to dominate the situation is a true asset to company-building.
Additionally, access to quality feedback in quick cycles can make or break early stage companies; rigorous candor is critical to making the best possible decisions with imperfect information. Investors who can offer tangible assistance and outside perspectives can be a huge boon.
What’s been the most helpful piece of advice you’ve received from a colleague?
Touch as many things as possible and don't be afraid of diving into many fields, including ones you know little about. Find the things that click—it’s the only way to find where you can stand out and be energized long-term. We have a rare opportunity as technology investors to see a wide swath of industries and figure out where in the puzzle our unique abilities fit best.
How would you describe the team at NEA and what about the culture resonates with you?
Humble, hungry, and honest—both interpersonally and intellectually. I think it's rare to find a team that is as interconnected as NEA, where everyone is thrilled to lend a helping hand and contribute to the success of the team, regardless of the task. At the same time, everyone is driven to be the best they can be, which feels uplifting and contagious versus competitive. I find it refreshing to be amongst a group of investors that are incredibly transparent and honest with each other and founders across all interactions and underwritings.
What’s an experience that’s shaped who you are today?
In my teenage years I was a competitive recurve archer and debater at the national level. Both of these extracurriculars—especially archery—reinforced discipline, patience, and a strong work ethic which are characteristics that stuck with me through my higher education, into my early career in banking, and now venture.
