What excites you about the healthcare sector?
I have always been drawn to healthcare because of the unique balance between mission and business success. In biotech, the ultimate goal is to raise the standard of care for patients across indications and disease areas. Investing in early-stage companies lets me contribute to that value creation while putting my particular skills and expertise to work.
What’s a problem you’re excited to see being addressed via the founders and teams you work with?
I am excited to see momentum in women’s health. From fertility to menopause to gynecologic cancers, areas that went without meaningful innovation for decades are now drawing serious investment. What I find most encouraging is that founders are advancing not just new therapies but a deeper understanding of women’s biology, an area that has long been understudied. That knowledge will compound, leading to better science and better medicines for years to come.
What’s a trait you had as a child that is still present in you today?
As a child, I had a vivid imagination that let me step into new occupations, new worlds, and new perspectives. I may have outgrown teaching my invisible students and treating my imaginary patients, but the instinct to picture myself in a different version of the world stayed with me. It helps me relate to people whose experiences differ from mine, and it shapes how I approach diligence, because evaluating an early-stage technology or idea means picturing the world it could help create.
How is NEA a helpful partner to have during challenging times?
NEA’s depth of experience is a real source of strength for our portfolio companies when times get difficult. Our team brings a breadth of expertise from varied backgrounds, and we welcome debate that draws on that mix. That means in nearly any situation a company faces, we either have the expertise to help chart a path forward or know someone who does.
What’s something that you geek out about or obsess over?
Anything and everything musical theater or Broadway-related gets me talking. I’ve been building a Playbill collection since I was about 10 years old, and it’s one of the few things that has come with me to every place I’ve lived. I may have once confessed my love to one of my favorite Broadway performers on the streets of New York, and he replied, “Thank you.”
