A Few Takeaways from E-Bootcamp 2012

Each spring, Stanford’s BASES (Business Association for Stanford Entrepreneurial Students) partners with Princeton University’s Business Today (BT) to hold an Entrepreneurship Bootcamp (E-Bootcamp) that has become one of the most selective and renowned entrepreneurship conferences. E-Bootcamp 2012 took place this past weekend, April 12-15, at Stanford University. The “elite 100” participants hailed from 64 different universities, 28 different countries, and also included contestants from BASES’ 150k challenge.

Themed “Real-Time Applied Entrepreneurship,” the agenda included a pitching competition, keynote addresses, panels, small-group workshops, and more. NEA’s Kittu Kolluri and Rohini Chakravarthy participated on the International Panel, engaging in lively discussions on topics such as the contrast in entrepreneurship between the Silicon Valley and the rest of the world, and difficulties in investing in businesses from other countries.

Below, Rohini shares a few key takeaways from the event:

Don’t sell a microwave to someone who doesn’t have a house! On the international panel, we were asked to comment on do’s and dont's while building companies outside the US. Silicon Valley has a lot of best practices around building companies and we talked about things to learn from that, but things that work here may or may not work elsewhere. You need connectivity before you can have apps, and for some segments of the international market need energy, potable water and a whole lot of basics before worrying about internet access!

Happily, the discussions after the panel session reflected that a number of entrepreneurs were already thinking from first principles. They are thinking about creating efficiencies in agribusiness, using distributed solar power for the cold chain, improving urban farming and a number of really neat ideas to solve problems where they live. Of course, they are also thinking about Instagrams for their own markets! The opportunity to get to know other entrepreneurs and add a few more skills to their toolkit visibly energized these attendees. We are proud to have been part of that process.
