NEA China

  • NEA Supports Relief Efforts Following Major Earthquake in China
NEA is committed to supporting the relief and reconstruction efforts following the massive 7.9 magnitude earthquake that struck the Sichuan province in Central China on May 12. The firm and its employees have made a significant donation to the China Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund to deliver aid to the many families impacted by this disaster and begin the process of restoring and rebuilding throughout the affected areas. The firm and its employees will continue to seek ways to provide further assistance and support to the many friends, extended family members and business partners who have been affected by this tragedy.

With an economy that has grown nearly 10 percent on average for the last 28 years, China's economy has quickly burgeoned to become one of the world's largest. China's continued efforts to expand global exports and awaken its own domestic appetite will result in a middle class of almost 800 million people, representing the largest homogeneous market the world has ever seen. This economic story has set a backdrop for exceptional venture opportunities that promises continued growth, as barely 10 percent of the population is currently online. With its emerging stock market now the sixth largest in the world, China is an extraordinary environment for entrepreneurs.

NEA's Strategy

NEA's long-term strategic approach to investing in China has evolved as our U.S.-based entrepreneurs increasingly look to China as a place of insatiable market demand and world-class talent. Today we have invested close to $300 million in more than 15 Chinese companies, three of which have already successfully gone public: Spreadtrum Communications (NASDAQ: SPRD), SMIC (NYSE: SMI) and Actions Semiconductor (NASDAQ: ACTS).

We work with a growing team of affiliates and a subsidiary of advisors on the ground in Beijing and Shanghai, plus a dedicated China-focused investment team in the United States. These teams possess international capabilities, a solid local understanding, and years of venture experience. At NEA, the entrepreneur is the hero—and we have both the deep domain expertise and vast capital base to support our heroes in building long-term, market-leading enterprises.

Investment Focus

NEA makes primarily direct investments in both early- and late-stage technology companies. We look forward to working with China's best and brightest entrepreneurs in the areas of technology, healthcare, and consumer products and services.
